This workshop, lead by award-winning artist and author Kevin Scully, will show you how produce a painting that is neither wholly realistic, nor completely abstract. Students will discover the enigmatic area of painting where the subject matter is recognisable, but the elements contained within it have been implied rather than defined, leaving the eye to fill in the missing detail.
Your tutor will first introduce this style of painting with a demonstration and a look at examples of his work. He will then take you through the various methods and techniques that you can use to create an atmospheric landscape/seascape painting. Students will then take those first steps in resisting the temptation to paint exactly what they see, and will instead find other more expressive and evocative ways of creating an image. Throughout the workshop Kevin will provide plenty of individual support and short demonstrations on various techniques to help you create paintings that lie in that elusive and intriguing area between realism and abstraction.
Kevin trained at Wimbledon School of Art, and worked for many years as a successful illustrator in advertising and publishing. Now an award-winning artist and qualified tutor, he has exhibited widely and travelled extensively, and is experienced in teaching in all mediums. His tuition is relaxed and supportive; he is known for his excellent interpersonal skills and is an inspirational and patient teacher. Kevin uses demonstrations and one-to-one tuition to help students gain confidence and develop their own individual style. His teaching style is informal, but based on a thorough understanding of all mediums. His primary aim is for students to have fun whilst drawing on his vast and varied artistic experience.
He is a winner of the Winsor & Newton Painting Prize, and the Clairefontaine Art Award. Kevin has also written numerous articles for ‘Artists and Illustrators’ and ‘The Artist’ , and is the author of several books on painting, including ‘Drawing and Painting on Location’, and ‘Landscape Painting’, which we stock in the art shop.
