What makes a portrait “speak” to us and how can we apply the unique properties of watercolour to this fascinating painting genre? Learn about the joys of controlling loose, running watercolour to our advantage and apply it to create your own personal portrait of a family member or friend from a photo. You will start the day looking at images and discussing questions on composition, focal points and the way light falls. Understand how to get the most from your materials, try out flesh tones and colour mixing to create your own unique portrait while developing your painting style.
Your friendly tutor Catherine Beale is an award-winning painter from Bath where her portraits have hung in The Holburne Portrait Prize Exhibition, as well as in London with the Royal Watercolour Society and Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours. Her paintings hang in private collections worldwide, including the Singapore Presidential Palace and have been gifted to HRH Prince Edward by the British High Commission in Singapore. She is an Associate of The Society of Women Artists with whom she regularly exhibits. Catherine enjoys explaining her techniques to groups, in articles in The Artist Magazine and as a registered SAA Tutor.
