This inspiring 2 day course is lead by Mark Fennel who recently won the Winsor and Newton painting award at the RBA 2020 annual exhibition. It is suitable for all abilities to try a portrait for the first time or improve existing portrait painting skills. Mark will demonstrate and guide you through his well-structured approach to painting a portrait, breaking it down into easy to follow steps. He will cover everything from his choice of materials and colour palette, and setting up, to colour-mixing, and how tone and colour temperature can be used to describe structure, shape and form.

On the first day Mark will begin with a quick demonstration painting from life then you’ll have the opportunity to work from the model. The next day students will be working from photographic reference, either of their choice or from one of the high resolution images that will be available. Over the two days there will be lots of one-to-one tuition and demonstrations at various stages as you progress with your portraits.

Mark Fennell is a professional portrait painter who works to commission from his home studio in the hill top village of Brill in Buckinghamshire. He works predominantly in oils, notable sitters include Antony Worrall Thompson, John Hood, Lord Mayor of Birmingham and singer – songwriter John Otway. His work has been selected for exhibition with The Royal Society of Portrait Painters at the Mall galleries London on a number of occasions. Mark was elected member of The Royal Birmingham Society of Artists in 2007. He is also a member of Oxford art society Buckinghamshire Art Society. As well as portraiture, Mark also enjoys the challenge of painting outdoors, working at speed to capture the fleeting effects of light over landscape. Mark runs workshops and demonstrations for art groups and societies across the uk and occasionally in Portugal and the costa Blanca Spain.

Selected for The Artist and leisure painter competition, Patchings festival open art exhibition, 2014 and 2018. Awarded The Artists and Illustrators Artist of the year West Design prize, peoples choice award 2012 for his portrait of 2nd world war veteran Len Nixey and also shortlisted for A&I artist of the year in 2019. Self portrait shortlisted out of nearly 10,000 entries for the Daily Mail ‘Not the Turner Prize’ and exhibited at The Mall Galleries, London in 2005. Featured on ITV’s ‘A Brush With Fame’ in 2005, portrait of Antony Worrall Thompson was chosen as his favourite.

“We enjoyed your clear and informative teaching style; this, together with your enthusiastic approach throughout the session kept us enthralled from start to finish.”

“I thoroughly enjoyed the Portrait painting day, despite being new to oils. You are an excellent, patient tutor and I am in awe of your talent. You explained the process very thoroughly and backed up every process with a fantastic demonstration. I particularly liked the fact that you were prepared to help me when I was floundering and to demonstrate how to correct or achieve a better result. That for me was priceless! The day went so quickly, how time passes when you are enjoying yourself. Thank you once again for a very informative and constructive day.”
