Back again after a hugely popular workshop last year, John Hoar is the master of fast flowing washes and impressionistic watercolour landscapes. Using pen and wash, and a limited palette, John will show you how to create an exciting painting that crackles with energy – painted in his own inimitable style. He will reveal how to distil an often complex scene into a simplified watercolour masterpiece. The workshop will be about making free and competent watercolours, using lots of water and understanding the importance of tone. You will complete three paintings, one of which will be with pen and ink and wash.
One of the most gifted watercolour artists in Britain today, John read Architecture at Cambridge and studied drawing and painting under Ruskin Spear R.A. He began painting full time in 1980, specialising in architectural subjects, landscapes and marine and floral studies. He has had over 50 one-man shows in England and Ireland, his latest being in China in 2016 where he represented Britain at the 2nd International Watercolour Salon at Qingdao. He is well-known for his instructional DVDs – five of which have been produced by Town House Films – which aim to teach aspiring artists how to paint simple and vibrant watercolours. He is an inspiring teacher, much in demand, who directs several residential courses both in Ireland and the UK and holds regular workshops at his home in South Molton, Devon.
John has his own gallery in his home town and holds two exhibitions a year as well as displaying work in galleries in England and Ireland. John has won a number of prestigious painting awards, including the Donald Blake prize in 2003, and the Lincoln Joyce prize at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour.
All abilities very welcome.
