After a quick look at composition students will begin a practice / warm up piece on an absorbent cardboard or paper surface (your tutor will supply this) with oil paints mixed with oil medium. This will help establish a good design and aims to eliminate any compositional problems, as well as giving you time to get a feel for the oil paints. You will then begin your main painting which will continue through to the end of the day where students can hope to have finished an alla prima painting of a winter landscape.
The day will be a mix of group demonstrations and 1 on 1 time with your tutor. Andrew will give detailed instruction on how he achieves certain effects and will circulate around the room throughout the day helping the students with their paintings.
Andrew has recently won two national awards; ‘The Bowyer Drawing Prize’ 2021 with New English Art Club in London and ‘Highly Commended’ in a recent Royal Birmingham Society of Artists July 2021 exhibition.
He trained and worked in illustration before taking up oils over 20 years ago. Now Helston based, he mainly works en plein air or from his studio at Krowji Redruth, painting the landscapes of Cornwall – particularly Porthleven, Mullion and the Lizard Peninsula. Painting in oils, Andrew strives to capture the changing light and rugged Cornish landscapes and seascapes in a figurative and impressionistic style of painting. Andrew sells his work in seven galleries throughout the UK.
All abilities very welcome.
