This workshop will cover composition, colour, brushwork and depth, with special emphasis on movement and atmosphere. Learn how to construct a painting in order to best tell the visual story, how to start it and methodically work through to a successful conclusion. The day begins with an initial half hour colour demo, using Daler Rowney acrylics. Students will then paint a small tonal study in black and white – this is a great warm-up to the day. This workshop, suitable for beginners to regular painters, will focus on brushwork and the variation of tone to achieve a credible sense of water and atmosphere in a painting. The rest of the time will be spent on larger colour painting(s). You will look at the structure and reflective nature of waves, still water and foam, and how to achieve the illusion of moving water and light through paint.

Throughout the session Jenny will give individual teaching and advice to each artist. There will be notes, and plenty of relevant source photographs will be provided.

Jenny Aitken is an award-winning painter known for her sparkling seas and coastal light. She lives and works in Derbyshire where she paints light in the landscape, in particular its effect on the coast and sea, though she regularly travels to Cornwall to paint. Through her use of vibrant colour, texture and movement, she tries, she says, to portray ‘the experience of a place’ – the weather, the seasons, the passage of time and of people passing through. She runs demos and painting workshops around the country, and is a guest writer for The Artist magazine. As a seasoned tutor, her passion for painting is well known, as is her encouraging and informative teaching style. She is one of the winners of the recent Artists & Illustrators Magazine ‘Artist of the Year’ competition, and she exhibits in the Harbour Gallery in Porthscatho which represents some of the best contemporary artists in the UK.
