Andrew Barrowman is a popular Cornish artist based at Krowji, who’s signature style has caught the attention of many galleries and private collectors, both in the county and further afield. This oil painting workshop is suitable for all levels of ability, including absolute beginners. The two day course aims to give students the opportunity to learn new techniques that can really be explored under Andrew’s careful guidance.
Working in oils you will paint the beautiful summer landscapes of Cornwall, complete with hazy summer skies. Andrew will first introduce you to his methods of oil painting and show some examples of his work. You will then look at colour mixing, particularly greens before learning how to paint convincing summer skies and fair-weather clouds.
After a quick look at composing your paintings using the Golden Cut, you will begin a practice piece on an absorbent cardboard support using paints mixed with oil medium. This will help establish a good design and eliminate compositional problems, as well as get a feel for the paints. Students will then begin the first of two alla prima paintings of summer landscapes, which will be completed at the close of the two day course.
Throughout each day Andrew will demonstrate how he achieves certain effects and circulate around the room to make sure questions are answered and support is always on offer.
Andrew trained and worked in illustration before taking up oils over 20 years ago. Now Helston based, he mainly works en plein air or from his studio at Krowji Redruth, painting the landscapes of Cornwall – particularly Porthleven, Mullion and the Lizard Peninsula. Painting in oils, Andrew strives to capture the changing light and rugged Cornish landscapes and seascapes in a figurative and impressionistic style of painting. Andrew sells his work in seven galleries throughout the UK.
‘Just a quick line to say thank you. Andrew Barrowman was such a happy surprise today, he is a natural teacher. He took time with everyone to ensure each and every person got the best help he could give. I have treated myself to a few workshops at Truro Arts this year. All were good, but I think Andrew was very special. Thank you for organising the workshop. Hope he will be back soon.’
