This practical painting workshop will enable you to develop an understanding of colour contrast. It is based on the visual experience of seeing and making colour and will provide a complete introduction to the use of the colour wheel followed by a practical painting workshop. Your work will be done at a small scale using gouache paint on paper, before being developed into final collages. Mary will share her wealth of experience and knowledge to ensure you go away with a deeper understanding of colour that allows you to paint with confidence.
Mary who has tutored for over 30 years at University College Falmouth, has won many prizes and awards, most notably the prestigious John Moores Painting Prize in 1995. She has exhibited widely, including at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and her work is held in numerous public and private collections including the Arts Council, London. Mary’s paintings emerge from the ordinary world of everyday surroundings, spaces and places in her life. Over the last five years she has emphasized the relationship of colour and the need to balance the immediacy of observed discovery in small-scale work with the demands and complexity of larger paintings.
The absolute security of design and self portrait are marks of authority, and there is something diamond hard in this artist that could be overlooked simply because she can sparkle.
Larry Berryman, Arts Review
From unpretentious situations, Mabbutt skillfully extracts a magnetic quality; of mysterious vitalised objects, and the soft cast light of a reflective existence.
Nick Wegner, Time Out
