Look forward to the beautiful colours of autumn in this expressive workshop. You will learn how to mix rich colour washes and experiment with different ways of applying watercolour. Try drawing into wet watercolour washes with Conte sticks, using them the traditional way on their side and sharp edges. Create texture with cling film and apply paint with sticks, feathers and other tools as well as brushes to achieve natural looking trees and branches.

Life and Energy in Pastels with Rebecca de Mendonca

Join visiting artist Rebecca as she demonstrates using soft pastels and charcoal to capture life and movement with figures in street scenes, landscapes and on the beach. Following this expert demonstration you will create quick sketches, in charcoal and pastel pencil of the human figure in motion. The final stage is to place these figures in street scenes and landscapes, using colour with soft pastels. Rebecca will be on hand to offer expert one-to-one support while you put new techniques into practice and experiment with all the possibilities of Pastels.

Acrylic Ink and Watercolour with Judi Trevorrow

Join Judi for this experimental workshop in acrylic ink and watercolour paint. You will produce 2 studies over the course of a day using black or brown ink before adding watercolours. Students can hope to produce at least 2 studies, the first with a constructed approach and the second much looser. You will learn how to use the ink on wet and dry paper, drawing with it using different implements and mark making before watercolour is applied over the top to produce a final result.

Illustrating Children’s Books – A Practical Insight with Caroline Pedler

It will predominantly be using the professional sketching process called thumbnails, to sketch out a storyline of choice, or one provided. Landscape Painting in Oils with Hester Berry

This workshop is a guide to making an oil painting in the studio. You will look at how best to gather source material, then how to get started on a final painting. After a brief demonstration, students will begin their own painting. We will look at how one might begin on a 'blank canvas', how to build up a work paying attention to tone and colour, how to spot problems along the way and some possible finishing touches. This ‘alla prima’ approach will mean that you hopefully go home with a finished oil painting at the end of the day. The skills learnt in this class could then be applied to plein air painting as well as further independent work in the studio. The class is suitable for any level of ability, whether you are new to oils or landscapes or just looking to hone your technique and improve certain aspects of your discipline.

Wildlife Portraits in Coloured Pencil with Jonathan Newey

This is an opportunity to be taught is a one day workshop that will show you how to draw wildlife portraits with coloured pencils. Painting the Sea with Jenny Aitken

This workshop will cover composition, colour, brushwork and depth, with special emphasis on movement and atmosphere. Learn how to construct a painting in order to best tell the visual story, how to begin it and methodically work through to a successful conclusion. The day begins with an initial half hour colour demo, using Daler Rowney acrylics. Students will then paint a small tonal study in black and white. It’s a great warm-up to the day! This will focus on brushwork and the variation of tone to achieve a credible sense of water and atmosphere in a painting. The rest of the time will be spent on larger colour painting(s). You will look at the structure and reflective nature of waves, still water and foam, and how to achieve the illusion of moving water and light through paint.

Using acrylic or oil, students engage with the technique through monochrome exercises painted from direct observation. It’s a process that accommodates the needs and interests of the individual and can be applied to landscape, still life or portraits, and abstract work, according to the preference of the student. Creating Animal Portraits in Watercolour with John Hopkins

In this workshop John will show how to depict a street scene and a harbour scene, using a quick and loose watercolour technique.
